Topics and topic groups (Beta)
Topics cluster your pages and queries by subject, score how strong you are on each, and group related topics together.
Topics shows which subjects your site is strong on in search, and which are thin. It helps you see whether a subject needs more pages, or better ones.
Topics is in beta. The clusters are built automatically from your search data, so some will be odd. Rename, merge and adjust them as you go.
How topics are built
We group pages that show up for similar searches into one topic. A topic's queries are every search any of its pages appeared for, and it is named after the main search of one of its pages.
Topic scores are recalculated after each import and every morning. To rebuild the clusters themselves from the latest data, use Regenerate Topics (see below).
Authority score
Each topic gets a score out of 100 for how strong your site is on it. A topic scores well when it brings in a good share of the site's impressions, ranks near the top, and is covered by several pages answering many different searches, including longer, more specific ones.
Status
Each topic gets one status:
| Status | Means |
|---|---|
| Authority | You are strong on this subject: a high score, good positions and several pages |
| Growing | A middling score, with impressions rising |
| Opportunity | Decent positions and plenty of impressions, but few pages: room to grow with more content |
| Emerging | New, or picking up many more searches, with few pages so far |
| Weak | Anything else |
Change a topic
Open a topic to see its pages, its queries, a trend chart and how it changed against the previous period. From there you can:
- Rename it.
- Merge it into another topic on the same site. This cannot be undone.
- Assign a URL by hand, or Remove a page from it.
Regenerate Topics on the Topics page rebuilds every topic for the selected site from scratch. Pages you assigned by hand stay where you put them. Other changes, such as renames, merges and removed pages, can be undone by the rebuild.
Topic groups
Topic groups collect related topics under one heading, such as "Running Shoes" over topics about trail shoes, road shoes and sizing. Switch between topic groups and all topics with the tabs on the Topics page.
Groups form on their own once a site has enough related topics. A group's pages, queries and impressions are the totals of its topics.
Topics that do not fit a group yet are listed as ungrouped. They join a group once enough related topics exist.
You can rename a group. A renamed group is marked Manual, and we stop regrouping its topics automatically.
