Rankings
See how many of your searches rank in the top 3, the rest of page one, page two and further down, week by week, and which crossed from one to another.
Rankings answers "are more of our searches reaching page one?" for one site, or for all of them together.
The bands
Each search (or page) goes in a band by its average position over the period, rounded to a whole place:
| Band | Average position |
|---|---|
| Top 3 | 1 to 3 |
| 4 to 10 | the rest of page one |
| Page 2 | 11 to 20 |
| Page 3+ | 21 and below |
The average is weighted by impressions, so a day with many impressions counts for more than a quiet one.
Switch between Searches and Pages at the top right to count either.
Cards
Each card counts the searches (or pages) in a band for the period you picked in the top bar, with the change against the period before when we hold the whole of it. Click a card to open that band in Queries or Pages.
The same bands show on Pages and Queries under "Where they rank", on each URL group, and on a page's own screen for the searches it ranks for. Click one there to list only those. See Pages and queries.
Each week
The chart counts each band for every whole week we hold, Monday to Sunday. Page 3+ starts hidden, as it is usually far bigger than the rest; click it in the key to show it.
Weeks are counted after each import, so a site you have just added has none until a whole week of its data has arrived.
With All sites picked, the weeks are added up across your sites: a search two of your sites rank for counts once for each.
What moved
Against the period before, the lists show what moved:
- Onto page one: from page 2 or further down, into the top 10.
- Off page one: from the top 10 to page 2 or further down.
- Into the top 3: from 4 to 10.
- Out of the top 3: to 4 to 10.
Each lists the busiest first, by impressions over both periods, with its average position then and now. "New" counts searches with impressions only in this period, "no longer seen" those with impressions only in the one before.
Searches stuck on page two with plenty of impressions are often the quickest wins. The Striking distance report in Reports lists them with what to do.
